USA Road Trip–preparing for a circuit of America in 2013

Seven years ago I drove an 8000 road trip from North Carolina to California and back again stopping at car museums, race shops, and private collections of cars.  That year was also the Tulsa, OK, event where a 1957 Plymouth was going to be dug up after being buried as a time capsule for 50 years.  That was a very special event and I spent three days there soaking up the anticipation, the reveal and the enthusiasm of automobile enthusiasts from all over the world.

I had never taken a road trip quite like it.  I met many people that were in love with cars and were gracious enough to share their collections with me and my readers.

In 2013 I plan to do another road trip where I will visit car museums, private collections, a race track or two, and some race shops.  I will be sharing all my experiences on this blog for all of you to enjoy.

Here is an opportunity for you to let me know about some great car places that I should include in the 2013 road trip.  That’s right – YOU can tell me where to go!  Now that hasn’t happened since I was last married.

Please don’t be shy here.  Even if you think “everybody” knows about a museum, car collection, race shop, etc., – tell me about it anyway.  Just leave a comment on this blog entry with a description, address, and a web site link, if there is one.

You readers have had an influence on the vehicle that I will be using on this 8000+ road trip all ready.  Several entries ago I talked about the various qualities that might be desired in a road trip vehicle and the number one suggestion from you readers was comfort!  So I have taken the advice to heart and have combined that with my own desire for some stealth.

So what is the vehicle that will take this blog on the road next year?  Well here is a hint:

    I can’t wait to read about the vehicle prep. Let’s see…..
    Fat V-rated tires, 8″ wide wheels, sway bars as thick as baseball bats, chipped ECU, 3″ dual exhaust, Momo Start seats, poly suspension bushings, HD Bilsteins, corner jacked suspension, roll cage, maybe a supercharger. GPS, a new V-1 radar detector, 3-4 GoPro cams, driving lights. And a killer stealthy paint job. Ought to be a lot of fun!

    Mike Yager’s Corvette Museum http://www.mygaragemuseum.com/ (see http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/29146 for more information). While in Illinois there is the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago as well as the Amboy Illinois Central Depot between Chicago and Davenport, just off I-88.

    You need to do Pikes Peak. And get all the way to the left coast and drive Highway One in California between LA and San Francisco. The better views are going north to south. Go to Pfieffer beach in Big Sur and have lunch at Nepenthe (just south of the beach). Depending on timing you might be able to catch a race at Laguna Seca in Monterey.

    You should watch “Horatio’s Drive: America’s First Road Trip”. It’s the story of Horatio Jackson, the first person to drive an automobile cross-country. It’s available on Netflix. There’s also a book of the same title, available as an audio book, so you can listen to it on your road trip.

      Kyle – excellent suggestion. As a matter of fact I did view the Ken Burn’s documentary https://jimsgarage.wordpress.com/2007/07/17/car-movies-horatios-drive/ and found it facinating. I didn’t realise there was a book! Thanks..
