As I travel about the US this summer I am finding some pretty amazing car museums for sure, but there are always those things that you come across that you really didn’t expect to find or see.

I was pumping gas into the car and I noticed this beetle guarding the hose.  Pretty impressive guy.

I told him he could keep the hose.

Later today I was having some lunch when I noticed something odd hanging above the tables:

Here is a close-up of one.  Yes, it’s a plastic bag and if you look close you can see a penny in it.

So what do you suppose it was for?

Give up?

Apparently flies see them as wasp nests and the penny looks like the hole in a wasp nest.  The flies don’t want anything to do with wasps so they stay away from the tables.

Who would have thought?

Looks like you ran into a stag beetle. This is what Wikipedia says: Male stag beetles use their jaws to wrestle each other for favored mating sites in a manner that parallels the way stags fight over females. Fights may also be over food, such as tree sap and decaying fruits. Despite their often fearsome appearance they are not normally aggressive to humans.
