On the Road–Meteor Crater

Leaving Midland I didn’t get too far before the signs appeared.  There was a meteor crater ahead.  Luckily it was not in the middle of the highway.

I took the marked exit and headed down Meteor road.  At the end of the road was this building.

I was anxious to see this landmark geological feature that was a result of a cataclysmic event.

I was ready to enter the main crater formed by the explosive impact of tons of meteoric material that had originated from outer space.

There were warnings for you to be on the lookout for rattle snakes as you walked the trail to the crater’s center.

There it was.  Almost 600 feet in diameter.  It had once been 100 feet deep, but erosion had reduced it to about six feet.

I was fulfilled.  This spectacular natural formation was everything that it could be.  It was with a special feeling that I headed back on the road toward New Mexico.
